What Is Paper Trading? A Beginner’s Guide
Paper trading is the practice of placing simulated buy and sell orders using virtual money instead of real capital, while still watching real, live market prices. The trades are not real, but the market data behind them is, so the experience of reading a chart and reacting to price movement is genuine.
The term comes from a time before software existed, when traders tracked hypothetical trades on paper to test an idea before committing real money. Today it usually means a trading simulator: a platform that gives you a virtual cash balance and lets you place orders exactly like a live brokerage or exchange would.
Beginners use paper trading to learn order types, position sizing, and how it actually feels to watch an open position move against you, all without financial risk. It is also useful for experienced traders testing a new strategy or a new market before risking real capital on it.
The Tradeskill is a free paper trading simulator built specifically for crypto: you get $20,000 in virtual cash, live market data, and pro charting tools, with nothing to lose while you learn.
